Abstract
Since 2018, Nicaragua has undergone a humanitarian crisis. The
people have been subjected to widespread repression for opposing
the state in protest, continuing a cycle of violence that has long
plagued the nation’s history. With a new generation envisioning a
nation that is free and democratic, a new memorial that echoes this
vision is needed. As societies have become more inclusive in the
last few decades, new forms of memorials have been conceived,
tempering the dominance of traditional heroic monuments in the
landscape. Examining case studies of how these new types of
memorials approach envisioning alternative futures, a series of
conceptual memorial spatializations is conceived. By using the series
to approach the memorial design, the intention of this practicum is
to explore the design of a memorial on the symbolically-charged site
of Laguna de Tiscapa, Managua, once the epicentre of power and
repression in the nation.
